The city’s name originated from the North Union Shaker Community, which resided in the area from 1822-1889. After the Shaker community dissolved, spectators purchased the lands, however, it wasn’t until 1905 that development in the area began.
Two fellows named Oris P. and Mantis J. Van Sweringen set out with a goal to create a “Garden City” suburb. The plan was to leverage the area’s natural topography and lakes to designate locations for housing, schools, churches, and more. The development that was created seceded from the village of Cleveland Heights in 1911. With around 250 people, the village of Shaker Heights was incorporated.
By the time the 1920s rolled around, Shaker Heights became a coveted residential suburb using strict zoning, tight architectural guideline, and building and deed restrictions—all of which were enforced and managed by the Van Sweringen Co. The “Vans” created the Shaker Rapid Transit line into downtown Cleveland. In 1920, the population in the village was 1,700, but by 1931 when it was incorporated as a city, the population had grown to an astonishing 17,783.
